"When Madonna came out with her hit Vogue you knew it was over. She had taken a very specifically queer, transgendered, Latino and African-American phenomenon and totally erased that context with her lyrics, “It makes no difference if you’re black or white, if you’re a boy or girl.” Madonna was taking in tons of money, while the Queen who actually taught her how to Vogue sat before me in the club, strung out, depressed and broke. So if anybody requested Vogue or any other Madonna track, I told them, “No, this is a Madonna free zone! And as long as I’m DJ-ing you will not be allowed to Vogue to the decontextualized, reified, corporatized, liberalized, neutralized, asexualized, re-genderized, pop reflection of this dancefloor’s reality!"

"Something my father taught me. It’s meant to harden your knuckles so you don’t break them if you get into a fight. It also has the added benefit of knocking on wood. My father believed that success is a mixture of preparation and luck. Tapping the table kills both birds with one stone."

I’m writing to ask for your help with a new and really beautiful non-profit called the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project. It’s an:
“Alternative to Detention Program that works with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Two Spirit, Trans and Gender Non-Conforming, HIV+ and their families currently in detention centers and those that are recently released from detention centers, seeking status in the United States.”
Basically, QDEP is an all-volunteer run non-profit that’s working to help LGBTQ refugees/asylees/undocumented folks that need social services assistance. They do Case Management, concrete services like food stamps and cash assistance, ESL, and Job Readiness among other things.
Here is the website if you’re more curious
To help raise some much-needed funds for QDEP I’m participating in a Bowl-a-thon, where we are challenged to raise $500 per team.
If you feel like this is something you want to support, we would really appreciate any kind of small donation you can make, which you can do here:
Go ahead and choose either team to donate to!

This is cool!
Things I constantly remind myself about.
>I don’t actually know what this person is thinking.
>It doesn’t matter what this person thinks about me.
>This emotion will pass.
>Things are never as bad as I make them in my head.
>I have plenty of talents.
>I am beautiful, intelligent, and strong.
>I’ve survived a lot of things.
>If I keep going, I will be proud of myself in five years.
